Art collective VINEGRETT – WHO AM I WHEN NOBODY’S WATCHING?

Today, we are visible almost all the time. We can invite the entire world to witness even our most intimate moments. We know what and how other people eat, who they spend their holidays with and what they do there, and when they are struck by anxiety or misfortune. We are there with them in the president’s Rose Garden and at the birth of a child.

But who are they, really? When I’m not watching?

Yes, I depend on how I appear to the world. Which means I have to put effort into shaping my own story so that I come across as genuinely intelligent, balanced, kind, successful and active — someone who leads an interesting life.

But what do I do when no one is watching?

What do I feel when I don’t have to live up to other people’s expectations? What do I truly want? Who am I, really? What would I actually do if no one ever found out? Do I even exist if there is no one else there to witness my existence?

The art collective Vinegrett’s exhibition, “Who Am I When Nobody's Watching?, searches for an answer to this question. Eleven artists bring something from within themselves into view, revealing their own stories — whether through an action, a place, an object, a memory, a feeling, an animal, a person, a colour, an abstraction, or something even the artist cannot fully explain.

And finally, the question passes from the artist to the viewer:

Who are you when nobody is watching?
